FAQ

A:General Game FAQ

Q1 : What is "Wangan Midnight?"

"Wangan Midnight" is a comic book series originally printed in the weekly Young Magazine that is the source of Wangan Maxi. It's been published in 42 volumes, so we recommend giving it a read. You'll be able to enjoy Wangan Maxi even more if you know the original story.

Q2 : It looks like there are two types of machines, one with a steering wheel and one with a tall stature. What are they?

The machine with the steering wheel is the "Driver Unit," where you can have fun racing. The tall, vertical machine is the "Wangan Terminal," where you can confirm your car data and attach/replace Dress-up parts.

Q3 : Is the game data recordable?

Yes. Save your game records by using the "BANAPASSPORT Card".

Q4 : Where can I buy the BANAPASSPORT Card?

You can buy it on either the "Driver Unit" or the "Wangan Terminal." At some game centers, you may also be able to buy it at a card vending machine other than the Wangan Maxi machines.

B:FAQ About the driver units and the Control System

B1 : FAQ About the Driver Unit and its Control System

Q1 : What kind of controls are there?

The control system consists of a steering wheel for turning left and right, a View Change Button (a green, square button), an interruption switch button (a red, circular button), a six-speed manual shifter, an accelerator pedal (the right pedal when facing the machine) and a brake pedal (the left pedal when facing the machine). Also, the seat can be moved back and forth depending on your height and driving position(see Q9)

Q2 : How much is the maximum rotation of the steering wheel?

It's around 270 degrees.

Q3 : What is the six-speed manual shifter(MT)

It's a control system component that lets you feel like you're really shifting an actual car's six-speed manual transmission.

Q4 : Is the six-speed manual transmission difficult to use?

The installed six-speed manual shifter will make the game much more fun if you can manage to use it since it's easy to shift and it doesn't require much power. But we've made the game so that beginners can play with an AT (automatic) without using the six-speed manual shifter. You can change whether you use or don't use the six-speed manual shifter afterward, so choose whether you use it or not depending on your skill.

Q5 : What happens if I use the six-speed manual shifter with a four-speed,five-speed,seven-speed or nine-speed car?

For four-speed or five-speed models, the gears that aren't used will be treated the same as the top gear.

for four-speeds, it will be: 1-2-3-4-4-4;
for five-speeds, it will be: 1-2-3-4-5-5;
for six-speeds, it will be: 1-2-3-4-5-6;
for seven-speeds, it will be: 2-3-4-5-6-7;
and for nine-speeds, it will be: 4-5-6-7-8-9.

Q6 : Which is faster, the MT that uses the six-speed manual shifter, or the AT that doesn't?

You can't really say because it depends on the skill of the player. If you use AT, the computer will change gears for you automatically. You'll experience stable performance since there are no missed shifts. If you use MT, gear changes are made at your own discretion, so you may be able to make times faster than the AT.

Q7 : How many perspectives can I switch to with the View Change Button?

You can choose from two perspectives, the perspective from just behind your car (third-person perspective), and the perspective from the front of your car (first-person perspective)

Q8 : What's the Intrude Change Button?

You can switch your interruption settings while playing when there are driver units that are networked.

Q9 : How do I move the seat back and forth?

There is a lever under the front of the seat. Pull the lever up to release the seat lock and move back and forth. Release the lever to lock the seat in that position.

Q10 : Why does my speed drop if I randomly shift through the gears when driving, which makes the shift feel like it’s gone off?

This is to prevent damage to the gears owing to excess gear shifting, unnecessary fiddling with the gear shift, etc. When you shift, make sure to do it thoroughly, one gear at a time.

B2 : FAQ About the Wangan Terminal and its Control System

Q1 : What kind of controls are there?

The control system consists of a touch panel that allows you to touch the screen to operate it.

C:FAQ About the Attract Mode

C1 : FAQ About the Driver Unit Attract Mode

Q1 : How do I see how many driver units are networked?

"○ cars in linked play" is displayed on the screen during Attract Mode. This "○ cars" shows the possible number of network connections. For example, if it doesn't show "4 cars in linked play" even though four driver units are installed, then there is a possibility they aren't networked for some reason (such as the network cable being loose).

Q2 : There is something like a clock on the Title Screen. What's it used for?

This displays the internal clock. Use it as a reference when earning "Date Titles" that depend on the date.

Q3 : "Rev *.**" is displayed on the Title Screen, but what is it used for?

This displays the software version running on the machine.

C2 : FAQ About the Wangan Terminal Attract Mode

Q1 : Why doesn't the terminal start when I insert a coin?

Start the Wangan Terminal by touching the touch panel. You don't need coins for anything on the Terminal other than buying a BANAPASSPORT Card. (Coins will be refunded right away on all screens other than the BANAPASSPORT Card Purchase Screen.)

D:FAQ About Entering Play Mode

D1 : FAQ About Entering Play Mode on the Driver Unit

Q1 : How do I start the game?

Insert the number of coins shown in the center of the screen. Step on the accelerator pedal (the right pedal) to start the game when "Please step on the accelerator" is displayed.

Q2 : I was asked, "Do you have a BANAPASSPORT Card?" Can I play if I don't have a card?

You can play the game even if you don't have a BANAPASSPORT Card, but you won't be able to save your game results. You'll be able to enjoy the full potential of Wangan Maxi if you have a BANAPASSPORT Card.

Q3: There was a message displayed that said, “Data from Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6 will be transferred to Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6RR.”

When you tap a card with Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6 data, you have the option to select “Transfer,” which will allow you to transfer the car data you were using for Wangan Maxi 6 to Wangan Maxi 6RR.

Q4 : How many cars can I register on the BANAPASSPORT Card?

Two hundred cars can be registered on one BANAPASSPORT card. You can use the top 5 cars in your lineup in races on the Driver Unit.

Q5 : Do I need additional coins to register additional cars?

You don't need additional coins for new car registration or additional registrations.

Q6 : What happens when I register an additional car when five cars are already registered?

When you register an additional car when five cars are already registered, the 5th car in your lineup will become the 6th car. If you want to use any car from the 6th or later, change your car lineup on the Wangan Terminal so that the car you wish to use is within the top five.

Q7 : The game said "You can use a Discarded Vehicle Card." What is a "Discarded Vehicle Card?"

It's a system where cars can be registered to start the game "from Episode 21 of the Story Mode" or "from a 600 HP/B Class car" by using a Discarded Vehicle Card.

Q8 : The game said "Choose a manufacturer," "Choose a car" and "Choose a body color." What are good standards for choosing a car?

Choose one as you like, whether it's one that you have an attachment to, one that you think looks cool or one that's the same as the one your dad drove.

Q9 : Should I choose an "AT or MT" transmission?

Choose AT, which doesn't use the shifter, as long as you're not used to the game. Once you're more used to the game, choose MT. You can change your transmission later on the Car Data Confirmation Screen (8/9) if you use the BANAPASSPORT Card.

Q10: After I chose the car I was going to use for a race, a message displayed that said, “A stamp has been sent from Friends. Race to get it!”

A stamp is displayed when your ghost was challenged in an online ghost versus battle. If you select “Yes” to this message, you’ll proceed to the race, and once the race is finished, you’ll get the stamp and be able to send the stamp yourself, too. This acts as a shortcut to “Return Stamp to Friend.”

Q11 : What is the "Car Data Confirmation Screen?"

You can change your settings and browse your car data on the Car Data Confirmation Screen.

Q12 : What are the choices "Refuse VS" and "Accept VS" on the "Please select VS acceptance" screen?

You won't be able to take part if you select "Refuse VS." You can toggle your interruption settings during the game with the "Intrude Change Button (the red, circular button)."

Q13 : What are the choices "YES" and "NO" on the "Challenge other racers?" screen?

This screen appears when another networked driver unit plays the game with "Accept VS." Choose "YES" on this screen to take part in an interruption versus battle. You won't be able to take part if you select "NO." (It will be treated as "Refuse VS" in this case.)

Q14 : The game told me to "Please choose a game mode."

On this screen, choose the Wangan Maxi single-player game mode that you will play from "Story Mode," "Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode" and "Time Attack." Play using your favorite game mode.
*You can't select "Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode" if you're not using a BANAPASSPORT Card.

Q15: I can't use a Discarded Vehicle Card.

If you have 200 cars registered on your BANAPASSPORT Card before using a Discarded Vehicle Card, you will not be able to use a Discarded Vehicle Card.

Q16 : Why did my car's name become "GUEST" when I registered a car on the Driver Unit?

When entering a car name, be aware that your car's name will become "GUEST" if you do not fill in a name or if time runs out with the name field being empty. In addition, it will be reset to blank when your input is rejected if you used words that are generally thought to be inappropriate.

D2 : FAQ About Entering Play Mode on the Wangan Terminal

Q8 : I can't touch "Give away a Discarded vehicle card."

You can't touch it when you don't have any Discarded Vehicle Cards that can be gifted. If you play the game on the Driver Unit and get Discarded Vehicle Cards that can be gifted, you'll be able to touch "Give away a Discarded vehicle card."

E:FAQ About the Game Modes

E1 : FAQ About the Story Mode

Q1 : Where should I start playing if I'm new to the game?

As the initial Story Mode advances, your rivals will get faster. Their level of difficulty supposes that your car is getting faster due to Tuning, so you should start from Episode 1 and continue one episode at a time.

Q2 : I can't choose the 5th episode.

You basically can't play every fifth episode until you've cleared the previous four episodes in Story Mode.

Q3 : I can't choose the 20th episode.

You basically can't play every 20th episode until you've cleared the previous 19 episodes in Story Mode.

Q4 : My rival is too fast, I can't win. (Episode 1 - 20)

The reason that you can't win may be:

1. a lack of Tuning.
2. a lack of practice.

If it's 1, then it's possible you're attempting higher ranked rivals too quickly. Race rivals that correspond to your car's settings and continue Tuning. If it's 2, then you just have to practice.

Q5 : My rival is too fast, I can't win. (After Episode 21)

The reason that you can't win may be:

1. a lack of Tuning.
2. a lack of practice.
 3. that your settings don't suit the race.

If it's 1 or 2, then the answer is the same as "Q4: My rival is too fast, I can't win. (Episode 1 - 20)." If it's 3, then try to change your car's settings by referencing the course displayed on the Rival Selection Screen.

Q6 : I can't choose anything but Episode 21 after reaching Episode 21.

After Episode 21, you can only progress one episode at a time in line with the progression of the original comic.

Q7 : How many episodes are there in Story Mode?

Story Mode consists of 100 episodes in total. The ending will play when all 100 episodes are cleared. (The difficulty will correspond to the level of tuning on your car. Check your Story Mode progress on the Car Data Confirmation Screen (2/9).)

Q8 : Does the difficulty of Story Mode vary depending on the arcade?

The difficulty of Story Mode is fixed. No matter what arcade you're in, it's the same difficulty.

E2 : FAQ About the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode

Q1 : What is the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode?

Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode is a mode where you use your "ghost" to race. A ghost is created by an actual player racing in Ghost Versus Battle Mode. The ghost memorizes the player's way of driving and races as the player does. The "ghost" is not really a ghost—it has a material form so you can run into it during the race. Since it reflects the player's skill and way of driving, you can enjoy a race that feels as if you're racing an actual player.
Additionally, you can change the appearance of your car using dress-up parts obtained based on the results of races. (Excludes some car models.)

Q2 : I thought I'd give the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode a try, but it doesn't appear on the Game Mode Selection Screen.

You cannot play the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode if you are not using a BANAPASSPORT Card. You can select the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode on the Game Mode Selection Screen if you use a BANAPASSPORT Card.

Q3 : Where is my ghost saved?

Ghosts are saved on an online server connected to the game you played. Ghosts are shared nationwide, so you can call a ghost from any arcade.

Q4 : How do I choose a ghost to race?

・VS Recommended Opponent When playing in Local, Away, or Same Make matches, you can race opponents under specified conditions that are at the same horse power. This mode is recommended for when you want to easily race various opponents.

・Free Search You can select opponents from a set horsepower, search for names to find specific ghosts, select previously fought ghosts, or even ghosts of people who have played in your venue.

・ Return Stamp to Friend Opponents who selected your ghost, challenged it, and sent you a stamp can be found in this menu. From here, you’ll be able to return that stamp to your opponent. You’ll also see displayed the ghosts recommended for stamp exchange. Displayed ghosts are limited to a maximum of 20, and as the number of ghosts with delivered stamps increase, they’ll be swapped out based on age and shuttle frequency.
For opponents you’d like to keep, you can lock in place up to five people using the Lock Friend option in the Car data confirmed(5/9) on the terminal unit. You’ll only be able to lock opponents you’ve had at least one shuttle with.

Q5: After starting to play, a message saying “Stamp has been delivered. Race to get it!” suddenly pops up.

Q6 : What course will I run in the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode?

No course is determined for the Online Ghost Versus Battle Mode. When choosing a racing location from all of the racing areas, each ghost will run the race down the branches they originally did.

E3 : FAQ About the Time Attack Mode

Q1 : What is the Time Attack Mode?

Time Attack Mode is the game mode where you compete against time by yourself on a course where there are no other rival cars.

Q2 : Is the course for the Time Attack predetermined?

You will run a time attack on a predetermined course.

Q3 : Is there anything I should be careful of when choosing the Metro Hwy course?

It requires additional coins to run on the Metro Hwy course. If you don't insert an additional coin in time, the C1 Inner Loop will be chosen automatically. Also, your additionally inserted coin will become invalid when starting an Interruption Versus Battle if you're set to "Welcome Interruptions" while running the Metro Hwy course. (If you select Time Attack and the Metro Hwy course after winning the versus battle, you'll need to insert another additional coin.) It's recommended that you choose "Refuse Interruptions" when doing a Time Attack on the Metro Hwy course.

Q4 : In addition to courses, I can choose the period of time and the background music for the race, but do they affect the time?

The period of time and background music do not particularly affect the time. You should choose a period of time that makes the course easier to see and drive on, and a background music that you can get into a good groove with.

Q5 : The screen glows red during the Time Attack.

That happens at a checkpoint. You can earn a new title by making all of these checkpoints flash.
(In the Hakone and Kobe areas, for early morning it’s a flock of birds and for late night it’s shooting stars; in the Hakone Daikanzan area, for early morning it’s a light airplane and for late night it’s a flash of lighting.)

Q6 : The total of the times for each section on the results screen and the total time aren't the same. Why?

The Time Attack time displays up to the third decimal place of a second (1/1000th of a second), but an even more accurate unit is used in the game's internal time calculations.
Digits below 1/1000th of a second are rounded down on the display, so there may be occurrences where the sum of each section time and the total time are different.

Example)
Section 1 Actual Time (A) 25.12345 s
Section 1 Displayed Time (B) 25.123 s
Section 2 Actual Time (C) 20.64260 s
Section 2 Displayed Time (D) 20.642 s

Displayed Section Sum (B) + (D) 45.765 s
↑Totals the time after the digits after 1/1000th of a second were rounded down.

Actual Total Time (A) + (C) 45.76605
Displayed Total Time 45.766
↑Rounds the digits after the 1/1000th of a second down after totaling the actual time.

E4 : FAQ About VS Player

Q1 : What is VS Player Mode?

An VS Player is a versus battle between players using connections between two or more Driver Units using a network cable. If your interruption settings are set to "Welcome Interruptions," then you can have a versus battle even if you're in another race.

Q2 : How many people can join VS Player Mode?

Up to four people can take part in a versus battle.

Q3 : Can a third or fourth person interrupt when two people are in a versus battle?

A third or fourth person can interrupt even during a versus battle.

Q4 : When a third or fourth person interrupts when two people are in a versus battle, will they enter the race midway?

When a new interrupting player appears, the course, the period of time and all other selections are reset.

Q5 : What courses can you race on in VS Player Mode?

After selecting the racing area, the Driver Unit will automatically decide the start location (start ramp) from those included in that racing area.
The branching selection panel will appear before the course's branching points after starting the race. The race will continue in the direction of the branch selected by the player in first place at that time.

Q6 : What courses can you race on in VS Player Mode?

After selecting the racing area, the Driver Unit will automatically decide the start location (start ramp) from those included in that racing area.

Q7 : Who determines the period of time for the versus battle?

The period of time for the versus battle is determined by majority.

Q8 : Who determines the background music for the versus battle?

The background music for the versus battle is set by the person who first set "Welcome Interruptions." When continuing in versus battles, the person who won first place in the previous race will set the background music.

Q9 : "If all players keep the brake down the handicap will be turned off." appeared when selecting the period of time, but what is a handicap?

The handicap is a system to relieve players who are really falling behind in order to make versus battles more competitive. The strength of the handicap is determined based on the number of that player's gauges. If you want a hardcore battle without a handicap, then when all players in the versus battle step on the brake pedal (the indicator will light up), it will become a "hardcore race" with nohandicap.

Q10 : I got a star mark when I won. What is this star?

You'll get a star depending on your results when winning in versus battles. This star is called an "Outrun Star". The more Outrun Stars a player has, the stronger that player is in versus battles.

Q11 : I lost some of my Outrun Stars. Why?

The rules for the increase and decrease of Outrun Stars are as follows:

Outrun Stars that can be earned per race

Race results 4-player race 3-player race 2-player race
1st ☆☆☆ ☆☆
2nd ☆☆ N/A
3rd N/A
4th N/A

However, the following rules apply for players who have 2,001 or more Outrun Stars:

Outrun Stars that can be earned per race (when you have 2,001 or more)

Race results 4-player race 3-player race 2-player race
1st ☆☆☆ ☆☆
2nd ☆☆ -1
3rd -1
4th -1

Q12 : It seems like the distance raced in VS Player is different every time. Why?

The distance raced in an VS Player is decided by the following formula:

Race distance = (basic distance raced) + (additional distance based on the number of players) + (randomly added bonus distance)

・Basic distance raced Condition 1) No one is using a card. 8. 0 km
Condition 2) All players have fewer than 20 gauges. 10. 0 km
Condition 3) One of the players has more than 21 gauges. 13. 0 km

・Additional distance based on the number of players 2 players 2. 0 km
  3 players 3. 0 km
  4 players 4. 0 km

・Randomly added bonus distance Anywhere from -0.5 to 3.0 km are added randomly.

Q13 : What is 'Vs Grade'?

VS Grade' is a new guide that indicates your VS player strength.
When you collect 'VS Medals', which you can receive for your VS player results, your 'VS Grade' increases based on the number of 'VS Medals' you have collected.

Q14 : I won first place in the VS Player and I was taken to the Game Mode Selection Screen. Why?

Whoever reaches first place in the VS Player survives and gets to play one more game.

E5 : FAQ About Other Race-Related Items

Q1 : I want to force the game to end midway.

You can retire (forced termination) by driving the wrong way in-game for more than three seconds when you've set your retire settings to "Yes" in the Car Data Confirmation Screen. Retire settings are valid outside of the VS Player.

Q2 : What happens if I continue on the Driver Unit?

If you select "YES" on continue, the game returns to the beginning of the Game Mode that you were just playing. When continuing in the VS Player, the players who selected "YES" on continue, will race again with the player who was in first place.
